My name is Walid F, and I’m a rising junior at Smoky Hill high school. I am intrigued with solar power and love to build my own creations. Since I come from a very sunny place in Africa, I came to learn, and expand my creations to solar  back home. My starter project is the minty boost phone charger, and my main project is a solar powered phone charger. My dream is to one day become a successful entrepreneur!

Final Project Video

My BlueStamp project is a solar charger, which I converted into a solar charging stand. It was a very rewarding project. I hooked up a 6W solar panel to a battery, a charger, and a boost to my phone. I learned a lot throughout this project, one of the most important things was that solar power is VERY unreliable. I spent many days testing until I got the correct voltage and efficiency I wanted. Essentially the project has a solar panel connected to a Li/Ion, charging the battery. And from the same Li/Ion the battery then charges the phone. Although I am done I plan to keep on modifying my project for more everyday use, and use more solar power for some speakers, making a more efficient solar power machine.

Starter Project

For my BlueStamp starter project I made a MintyBoost by adafruit. It’s a backup power source made of two AA batteries that allows any device that charges through USB. It is a device where using resistors I got an exact voltage of 5V, the standard voltage for my apple products. I learned a lot about the flow of electricity (electrons) through the wires. I also learned a lot about resistors and toning down for a precise level of voltage. I struggled with soldering the first resistors flatly on the PCB board, but then got the hang of it, and now apply all that I learned into other projects.
